Paradox of Progress

Paradox (noun)

  1. a seemingly absurd or self-contradictory statement or proposition that when investigated or explained may prove to be well founded or true.

Two very contradictory things are required for progress:

  • Patience
  • Urgency

When jumping into a new habit, role, or experience, we need patience to understand that starting something new or different means only one thing: we’ll suck at it. Realizing that anything worth while takes time. We must have the patience to know things will hurt, mentally and emotionally, as we change our routine, our body, our habits. We’ll mess up along the way, but having the patience to laugh it off and get back on the right path is key because long term changes are just that, long term.

Urgency to action. Waking up every day urgently wanting to get back to developing the new habits, routines, and lifestyle changes that will lead to a better way. Wanting to dive right back into that uncomfortable spot because we know that’s where growth occurs. If we’re only urgent to see results, we’ll get frustrated and quit early. But if instead we are more urgent to fail and mess up because you know it’s a requirement of progress and eventually “getting it,” each day will excite you as you’re one step closer.
