The Four Agreements: Agreement #1

Agreement #1 is to be impeccable with your word.

This chapter was amazing.

The main concept that stuck out to me is that words shape how we view ourselves.

We as humans were given the gift of speech, and speech dictates a lot in our lives.

But most of us don’t understand that or are not intentional in our words as impactful as they are.

The main point made in this chapter was that at an early age, our parents (most importantly), family, and friends, shaped how we viewed ourselves growing up which inherently shape who we are as adults.

We are given believes of others about who we are and those believes becomes our own. Therefore, they become us.

Most of this happens at an early age so a majority of it is subconsciously known to us.

Going into this New Year I’m revisiting this concept first.

How?

  1. I’m going to focus on allowing good thoughts, good conversations, good books into my mind more than gossip, hatred, and things like music. Focusing on positive and reinforcing speech will help.
  2. Starting my day off with self reinforcement and putting more trust into my own thoughts. Breaking down the believes of others that have become believes of my own.

Speech is powerful.

Other concepts from this chapter were:

  • Gossip and complaining are the easiest, but most destructive forms of speech. People in misery do not want to be in misery alone.
  • Hell on earth is going against your word to yourself and to others.
  • Words are like seeds and our minds are fertile. With words of love come good seeds that grow to be a beautiful life, but with words of fear come hatred, anger, and hell.
