Do not take anything personally.
This agreement is especially hard, but it follows two main thoughts (at least from what I pulled away from it).
- What people say is a total reflection of themselves rather than you. For instance, if someone calls you fat, dumb, attacks you, tries to embarrass you, or does really anything to you, it’s not personal and it says more about them than it does you.
- Having the ability to not take anything personal is a clear antidote to a life of hell on earth since no ones word can damage you.
This is especially hard to follow in today’s environment where it seems like everyone and their mother want to attack someone and share their ‘justified’ opinion on everyone’s actions.
Going back to the first agreement, everyone is living in their own world, shaped by the speech and words of countless others that came before them.
They have their own self doubt, their own self hatred, and their own lack of self respect that they want to impose on you.
It’s your job to not let them.
Believe in your own word and instead of getting angry or reacting to other’s words, reflect and ask. yourself “what could this person be going through for them to be so hateful?”
You can’t control other’s opinions, but you can control your response and belief in them.
