There was a point in my career that sticks with me more than any other moment.
I was a young sales rep trying to make a stamp at the company I was at.
I had a sales coach on the other line during a training, and I was reviewing my latest deal.
In reviewing the deal, I frantically and nervously talked for about 7 minutes straight and used nothing by personal phrases like,
“I don’t understand why they…”
or
“I want them to do this next step because…”
At the end of the rant, my coach said something that sticks with me today.
“Eddie, all you’ve done is talk about yourself. Who are you really trying to help?”
Since then, in both sales and life, I’ve framed things more so about others than myself.
Give others recognition when you succeed.
Seek to help promote your manager instead of yourself.
The more I considered others first, the more money I made and success I had.
Now, the only caveat is when things go wrong, take the blame. Own that failure.
But for success, make it about others.
See where that takes you.
